Data Literacy

Training your team to read and question its own numbers. It is what keeps the change alive after we leave and what separates a dashboard in use from one abandoned.

Talk to a specialist

A dashboard nobody can read is an expensive report.

There is a pattern that repeats: the project delivers, the dashboard goes live, the board approves. Three months later usage has dropped, the spreadsheets are back and somebody asks whether the investment was worth it. The dashboard did not fail. Nobody taught the team to use it to decide.

Data literacy is not tool training. Knowing how to click a filter is the easy part and takes an afternoon. The hard part is looking at a variation and knowing whether it means anything, noticing when the breakdown is biased, and having the confidence to say that the number presented does not support the conclusion being drawn from it.

What the programme covers

Always with your own operational data. A generic example does not produce the behavioural change we are after.

  • Reading the indicator. What mean and median are and why the difference between them changes decisions. Variation that is noise and variation that is signal. Why a percentage on a small base misleads.
  • Questioning the breakdown. Where the number came from, which period, who was left out. The question that prevents the wrong decision is almost always about the breakdown, not the value.
  • Connecting number and action. Moving from "margin fell" to "what decision do I take because of it". It is the step most training skips.
  • Telling the story. How to present data to whoever decides: what to highlight, what to leave out and how not to lead to the wrong reading without noticing.

Cohorts by role

The same session for the board and for operations serves neither.

  • Board. Focused on reading strategic indicators with scepticism and demanding the right breakdown from whoever presents.
  • Management. Focused on investigating their own indicator, finding the cause and defending the analysis in a meeting.
  • Operations. Focused on using the dashboard day to day and recognising when the data they feed in themselves is wrong.

What you are left with

  • The programme material. Built with your data, reusable for whoever joins later.
  • The metrics dictionary. The rule behind each indicator in plain language, which becomes the shared reference in discussions.
  • Internal multipliers. People from your team ready to run the next cohort.

How we run it

We start by watching how decisions are made today: which numbers circulate, in which meeting and what happens to them. That survey defines the programme and usually reveals that the problem is not missing data but indicators each department calculates differently. Sessions are short and frequent, with exercises on real cases from the operation between them.

How we measure results

The indicator that matters most is behavioural: dashboard usage months later, and the share of decisions that start citing the data. We also track the fall in parallel spreadsheets when they disappear, the team has come to trust the source.

We now have a far more robust, fast and visual view of each management area’s results.

About this service

Isn’t this just Power BI training?

No. Tool training teaches clicking; we teach interpreting and questioning. If your team also needs the tool part, that comes as a module but on its own it does not change how decisions are made.

How much time does the team need to commit?

Short, spaced sessions work better than a long immersion: the learning has to be applied in the routine in between. In practice, a few hours a week during the programme.

Is it worth it if we already have the dashboards?

That is exactly when it is worth most. A finished, underused dashboard is the scenario where the return appears fastest, because the technology investment has already been made and is sitting idle.

Does it work for people afraid of numbers?

The programme was designed for those people. We start with the indicator the person already uses day to day, in their own context. Nobody needs to learn statistics to question a breakdown.

How do we know it worked?

By behaviour, not by a test. We track dashboard usage, the presence of data in decisions and the reduction in parallel spreadsheets the most honest sign that the team has come to trust the official source.

Does your team use the dashboards you paid for?

A 30-minute conversation usually reveals why not.
